Edwyn Collins - Dilemma

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

Since his very close brush with death a few years ago, Edwyn Collins' comeback has been almost miraculous; having to learn to play properly again with his body and mind affected by his illness. You'd think that even taking vocal duties on a few songs would be an achievement, but the former Orange Juice man has been in prolific writing and recording mode, as well as his production work and bravely taking to the stage for live performances. This would be cause for celebration enough, but the fact that he's done so without losing any of his past form is remarkable. He doesn't need to rely on his bad fortune for sympathy reviews, the man's got talent.

On the verge of his 2nd album recorded since getting out of hospital ('Home Again' was recorded before but released after) he gives us new video and single 'Dilemma'. It doesn't take a genius to see why the man is still so revered 30 years into his career. Brass and a shuffling beat introduce the song and those vocals sound in fine form. Considering this man is responsible for helping to create indie music as we know it, it's always interesting to see how much of a soul influence creeps into his work. That element can definitely be found here and budding indie bands should take note. 'Understated' is out next week.
