Scott Liss - Medicine

Article by KevW

Thanks to certain groups and individuals who've taken up half of the charts in the last few years, acoustic and folk music has become something to avoid, with the term "singer-songwriter" being an instant turn off. Steering clear of any sounds that fit either category would be a little premature though, because, as with every genre, there are always people flying the flag and making great records. Why wouldn't there be? Take Los Angeles artist Scott Liss for example. He often uses an acoustic guitar and would certainly be described as a singer-songwriter, but doesn't deliver watered-down pap.

His past music has even dipped into grungy alt-rock, but new single 'Medicine' is defiantly folky and acoustic, using a picked style that recalls certain early Neil Young tracks. There's a dreamy aspect to this too, as well as a faint whiff of psychedelia, and you'd hazard a guess that Elliot Smith is an influence as its perhaps his fabulous body of work that 'Medicine' brings to mind the most. Scott Liss will release his new album 'Modern Isolation' on January 12th, and if this is anything to go by, he should be showing a few better known acts how this kind of thing should really be done.
