Unknown Mortal Orchestra - So Good At Being In Trouble

Single review by

It's been a leisurely and slightly prolonged introduction to the second album from American-based New Zealanders Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Following an acclaimed debut, they announced in September that the follow-up (inspiringly called 'II') would be released on the equally acclaimed label Jagjaguar, an imprint whose roster they comfortably fit in to, This announcement was made with the release of a single, 'Swim And Sleep (Like A Shark)' which was a quite lovely, twangy piece of psychedelic alt-rock which promised great and inventive things.

It may just have been a case of avoiding the Christmas rush, but it's only now, just a couple of weeks ahead of the album being with us, that another song is allowed to grace our ears. 'So Good At Being In Trouble' drops the twang, it drops the psych a little too, aiming more for a chilled and lo-fi alt-rock sound. Not quite as instant, this is still a suitably impressive piece that sounds like it gets up around lunch time, sparks up a spliff and then heads down to the beach for the rest of the day. Casual, but in a very cool way.
