Out This Week - 5th August 2013

Summer Cannibals - Wear Me Out

Portland's Summer Cannibals have come a long way since we gave them a band to check out feature last summer. At that point they were a duo, and have now evolved into a quartet (and even that's had some line-up changes). This week we get their debut album 'No Make Up' which is sounding every bit like they've lived up to that early promise. 'Wear Me Out' for example, is a top-drawer experimental indie/rock tune.

Barbarossa - Turbine

In the past Barbarossa has released records on other labels and been a member of Jose Gonzales' band, but new album 'Bloodlines' will be his first on the brilliant Memphis Industries label. His sound takes in a wide array of influences from soul, indie, R&B, rock and electro. You can hear a great example of this on free download and album sample track 'Turbine'.

Black City Lights - Offering

The duo of Black City Lights are producer Calum Robb and vocalist Julie Catherine Parr, both from Wellington, New Zealand. 'Offering' is the pair's second proper single and is taken from their debut album 'Another Life'. There's a hint of Beach House in their dreamy beats and wonderful vocals that should see them become embraced by the dreampop community.

Dinosaur Bones - Spins In Circles

Toronto band Dinosaur Bones have big things expected from them following a well received debut album, and this week we get the follow-up, 'Shaky Dream' which includes free single 'Spins In Circles', a chilled and slightly experimental sounding piece of alt-rock that gets better and better with each play, inhabiting a world where The Strokes decided to morph into Pavement.

OBLIGTORY RECORD OF THE WEEK

Pond - Xanman

I think we've all established the fact that Perth, Australia's Pond are very good at making psychedelic rock songs, we've also established that they're incredible prolific at it too, but this doesn't come at the expense of quality. 'Hobo Rocket' will be their fifth album since 2009 (not to mention EP and so on) and there's a sixth already in the works. You should, by now, have downloaded the album's first single, 'Giant Tortoise', and you may well be familiar with their current single 'Xanman'. If not, then here it is in all it's deep-psych, power-groove glory with accompanying messed up, head-spinning video.
