Celestial Shore - Valerie

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

Psychedelia. What do you think of when you hear that word? Musically, not visually. Effects-heavy guitar music? Lots of wah-wah pedals and flanging? Maybe jangly guitars and sitars and lyrics about expanding your mind? Or perhaps its the deeper psych that's been in fashion lately, a fuggy chug of acid-fried sound. Next week Brooklyn band Celestial Shore will release their debut album '10x' and the current single from the album is psychedelia, but perhaps not as you know it. Because of this, and also because of it's odd time signatures, you may struggle with it at first.

Underneath everything, 'Valerie' is a nice, relaxed and trippy piece of psychedelia, but there are sudden bursts of sound that seem to arrive at random intervals, never allowing the song to settle. As soon as it gets into its stride something jumps out to make it stumble. You could say this is a truer form of psychedelia, as it really does mess with your mind, not just muck about with some hippy effects. Whether the album will follow suit remains to be seen, but they're not short of admirers. The album was mixed by Deerhoof's Greg Saunier, contains contributions from Empress Of's Lorely Rodriguez and has cover art from Prince Rama. So they're well connected. But it's whether the music connects that will be the real test.
