Five For Free #178

Jay Arner - Don't Remind Me

At the end of June, Vancouver musician Jay Arner will be releasing his self-titled debut album on Mint Records. There are a couple of demos to be found on his Bandcamp page but other than that we have no further info. In fact we're not even sure how we found out about this song! Anyway, it's a very good melodic guitar-pop tune and we like it very much.

Brittsommar - The Painter

On a more familiar note, Sweden's Brittsommar are a band we first encountered last month. The project of Samuel L Gebauer, 'The Painter' is the third single to be taken from Brittsommar's acclaimed album 'The Machine Stops' and is stereotypical of his unique take on dark atmospherics and haunting storytelling which is far more accessible than music of this variety has any right to be.

Firehorse - Good

Brooklyn singer-songwriter and instrumentalist Leah Siegel is the brains behind Firehorse, and with her band will be putting out album 'Pills From Strangers' on June 25th. Before then you can get your mitts on free single 'Good', which as song titles go is perhaps a slight understatement. We'd add a "very" to the start of this experimental indie/electro/pop number.

herMajesty - Lisbon Street

Also from New York, herMajesty occupy a slightly different sonic plain. Tapping into psych-pop and the sounds created by the likes of Bowie and Roxy Music, there's an air of times gone by about new track 'Lisbon Street', but the production and their own personal imprint prevent it from merely being a recreation of the music of the past.

Giga Herbs - Smile Machine

Well this one's an interesting idea for a song. Giga Herbs are yet another New York band and one with a wide range of influences. 'Smile Machine' is slightly off-the-wall, combining the indie/psych/pop that The Flaming Lips used to make with a host of other bands revered by each of the members. We were told this track would brighten up our day, and we can confirm that it did.
