Jackson Scott - That Awful Sound

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

If it's lazy, chilled, lo-fi sounds that you're after then look no further than Melbourne's Jackson Scott and his soon-to-be-released album 'Melbourne'. The singer-songwriter's first album will be on the ever reliable Fat Possum label, so that's a good stamp of approval. Live they're a trio that take inspiration from surf, pop, krautrock and psych, but this single (out now, with the album due September 9th) is much more in line with bands like Pavement and the more stoner side of the US alt-rock scene of the '90s, and it sounds great.

The vocals might sound half asleep and the guitar about as frantic as a sloth waking up from a nap, but this is all by design and it works brilliantly. The similarly lazy drums give this track the vibe of natural coolness and all these aspects make for a song that can be listened to over and over without the effect lessening to any particular degree. Basically Jackson Scott sounds like he doesn't get out of bed before lunch, and when he does he just sits in his room pissing about with a guitar and a tape recorder. The truth may be different, but it's the music that counts, and that's just fine.
