David Bronson - Us

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

The point of overkill for US singer-songwriters and bands dabbling in harmony-rich, semi-acoustic alt-country/rock tunes was reached in about 2009, yet still they come, plying us with their albums and wishing they were in Wilco or Fleet Foxes and so on. As a rule we sigh, and then look the other way to find something more inspiring. But there's always been something different about New York artist David Bronson, and with each passing single we're led to believe that his debut album, 'Story', could be an absolutely wonderful record.

First came 'Watch The Sun (October Reprise)' which had some glorious vocals, then the misty-eyed 'Outside', and now 'Us'. On paper this shouldn't be quite as stunning as the others; it's more regular in construction and in style, but in real life it's just a good, albeit in a slightly different way. The melodies that Bronson creates are quite beautiful, so even though this song is a little more bare at the start, the male and female vocals fit together perfectly. Then electric guitar is added, almost giving a 'Harvest'-era Neil Young feel. Harmonies do come, toned-down just a bit more this time, and then there's an added twist as the song blossoms even further into something unexpectedly powerful. If you haven't checked him out yet, take our word for it. David Bronson is the real deal.
