Out This Week - 4th February 2012

Pond - Tortoise

We're not quite sure how Kevin Parker does it. In 2012 he was involved in three of the most acclaimed albums of the year by Tame Impala, Melody's Echo Chamber and Pond respectively. So much for lazy stoners. Apparently Pond have two more albums ready to go already, we're guessing awesome psych behemoth and free download 'Giant Tortoise' will be appearing on one of them.

Matthew E White - Big Love

There have been a couple of bands involving Matthew E White before he reverted to his real name. You may know his work with either Fight the Big Bull or The Great White Jenkins. Now he releases his debut solo album 'Big Inner', bringing us a whole different kind of psychedelia, mixing it with funk and the chilled madness of the Beta Band. Single 'Big Love' is a stunning example.

Thao & The Get Down Stay Down - Holy Roller

California-based folk-rock group Thao & The Get Down Stay Down slip slightly more towards an indie sound with this free single. 'Holy Roller' is taken from their fifth album 'We The Common' which is out this week. This particular track almost dips into the psychedelic itself with that plucked guitar vying for space with a throbbing 60s-style groove.

Elephant Stone - Sally Go Round The Sun

It feels like we've waited a lifetime for the self-titled album from Canadians Elephant Stone, the follow-up to their self released 'Seven Stones' LP in 2009. 'Love The Sinner Hate The Sin' was fantastic, 'Heavy Moon' was fantastic, and the next track unveiled from the album, out today, is the brilliant swirling psychedelia of 'Sally Go Round The Sun'.

OBLIGATORY RECORD OF THE WEEK

Veronica Falls - Broken Toy

Personally I was slightly disappointed with the debut album from London indie/fuzz-pop band Veronica Falls. No such problems with their second album 'Waiting For Something To Happen'. In fact it was a close call as to which track got the nod as OROTW, there were several contenders. In the end it was a close call between 'Buried Alive' and 'Broken Toy' with the latter winning by a nose, purely on the virtue of being one of the most lovably melodic and catchy indiepop songs to have been released for a while. Really though, it's worth investigating the whole album, it's a corker.
