Hibou - Glow/Hollow

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

This 19-year-old from Seattle has definitely got something going on. Having cut his musical teeth as the drummer of Craft Spells, Peter Michel has toured the US and Europe before most musicians have got their first proper studio time sorted. Now he's decided to go it alone as Hibou and has just released this double A-side single. The first word that springs to mind when you hear the opening bars of 'Glow' is "wow". This isn't your general teenage demo fare, this is high quality indie/pop with elements of krautrock creeping in and melody by the bucket-load. Reverb's been in fashion lately in just about every genre going, especially the kind of guitar music this guy's making.

The vocals are soft and distant too. For references then think DIIV, Triptides, Being There and even The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart. This is lo-fi pop heaven. Second track 'Hollow' doesn't exactly pale in comparison either. With a slightly more 80s vibe, there are more electronic sounds and that ever present echoing effect that blends all the parts together, kind of like a budget wall of sound. This is an incredibly assured and instantly lovable single, you won't need time to get to grips with it, it hits you right away. The only downside is there are only two songs here. More please, pronto.
