Binary - You Need The Blue Key

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

Rejoice! Some electro-pop that has attitude and wants to put its foot down and announce its arrival. The influx of often female-fronted 80s synth throwbacks that have given us some fine records these past few years must surely be reaching the end of its current lifespan. The shoegaze revival where blokes in leather jackets piss about with boards of effects pedals wishing they were in The Jesus & Mary Chain must also be nearing the end of its current cycle of relevance. Sure, plenty will still press ahead making records this way, but we're predicting diminishing returns for a few years until someone special comes along and blasts those doors open again. It won't be the end for either genre, just a probably sidelining for a while.

What will replace them for us alternative music lovers? Well how about London group Binary. They know a thing or two about noise (they've toured with A Place To Bury Strangers) but they want to incorporate a little more into what they're doing. Those stoned BRMC-style vocals are here, so is some cutting electro that has been brought in from harsher experimentalists than the new romantics or new-wave crowd. They're combining the two genres we mentioned but with added bollocks. New single 'You Need The Blue Key' is a thunderous introduction to their 'Amber' EP, the second release following last year's 'Prisoner' single. It's old, it's new, it's loud, it's melodic, it's experimental, it's individual; it's everything unique new bands should be aiming for. Binary could replace noise-rock and electro-pop in one fell swoop, they're a band we should embrace.
