Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk
When seeing the name 'Strangelove' in relation to music, people of a certain age (let's just say the wrong side of 30) will probably find their minds wandering back to the underrated Britpop also-rans of the same name, who in turn may have taken their name from the 60s garage group The Strangeloves (of 'I Want Candy' fame). Are this London quartet secret Britpop fans? Well maybe, but in truth Strangelove didn't quite fit that tag, they were just a guitar band who happened to be around at the same time, and as for Fractures, well yes, their music owes a definite debt to bands of that era, so maybe they are.
This new single quickly distances itself from the Britpop scene itself, opting to take in sounds of other bands of that generation who may or may not have had that tag plastered on them. 'Strangelove' has a little bit of glam thrown in, a little bit of early Suede and guitars courtesy of the post grunge wasteland where many unsung (at the time at least) heroes made some cracking albums that fell between the two movements. Maybe if Fractures really can take off, and this single will definitely give them a helping hand, some of those lost classics that us people of a certain age still treasure will be given a rightful reevaluation.
