Dean Blunt - Papi

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

It's very difficult to know what to make of Dean Blunt. He first became known to us as half of London duo Hype Williams who concocted a strange mix of different sounds that never quite got our pulses racing, but it was clear they had interesting ideas and were able to live in their own creative bubble. Dean Blunt went solo last year with the album 'The Narcissist II', but it's this spring's 'The Redeemer' album that will be his official debut solo album. What it will be like is anyone's guess, Blunt doesn't follow rules and tends not to stay in the same place for too long if he can change it. Maybe that will all change now? Maybe the album will be a concept or a piece that will flow and the tracks gel.

So far we only have exhibit A: new single 'Papi'. The song is simple, built around a piano line that gets burried in the mix along with the beats. It's fairly repetitive but swathes of other sound effects adorn the song and create a lush, smoky ambiance. It sounds absolutely fantastic, like Tricky kicking back with some soul greats and aiming for the heavens instead of focusing on the brutal realities of life. Blunt's vocal is half spoken half sung, and this suits him best. He possibly doesn't have the vocal chords to compete with an Otis Reading or a Marvin Gaye, but the way he carries this song is sublime and really adds to the atmosphere. Potential leap from relative obscurity ahead.
