'Living Is A Dying Art' is the third album from Minneapolis band High On Stress, it was released in 2011 in the US but has taken its time for the news (and more importantly, the music) to trickle across to this side of the Atlantic. It's our loss. The sound the band make is pure American alternative rock that draws on the various elements that four or five decades of guitar bands have built upon. You can hear Springsteen and Tom Petty, and you can hear The National and The Gaslight Anthem. It transcends time, such is the power of classic rock 'n' roll. It's no surprise the band mention The Replacements, Spoon, Wilco and Ryan Adams. Like any of those acts? Then you'll love these guys.
Not only do they have the sound perfected, they have the songs to match. Even those who prefer a more British sound or generally shun traditional band formats as being old-hat can tell that 'These Days Are Gone' has all the right ingredients mixed in just the right way. It has soul, it has blues, it has a groove and it rocks. Stick in a strong chorus and just enough of an anthemic slant and you have the makings of a killer tune. We're not sure what level of attention High On Stress have received from the UK press, but to us they're new, and if anyone has the phone number for anyone at Uncut magazine they should give them a ring. They'll be all over this, and for once they'll be right to be.
