Fantasy Rainbow - Condominium

Single review by KevW

Since it's no longer used to advertise credit cards, Manchester's Fantasy Rainbow could stake a claim to the catchphrase "my flexible friend". The main creative force behind the band is 19 year old Oliver Catt, with the band being able to perform solo, as a trio or as a quartet. Handy for playing gigs at short notice, and sets and set-ups, presumably, can be varied to fit venues and time-slots. It should stand them in good stead on the live front and with a just handful of low-key EP releases to their name, a few shows across the pond in New York have been booked for later this month, including a support slot for fellow indie types Ra Ra Riot. It's all go on the release front too, with debut album 'Bos Taurus' out on November 5th. The album was recorded in Nashville at the studios of acclaimed producer Vance Powell. These guys get about a bit.

New single 'Condominimum' should hold a few clues as to why Fantasy Rainbow are attracting as much attention away from Blighty as they are back here. In terms of sound this track very much fits in with the experimental/alternative scenes that are thriving in places like Portland and Brooklyn. You wouldn't bat an eyelid if you were told the band were a product of the US underground, indeed it's mildly surprising to learn they hail from North West England. With us Brits currently lapping up such sounds as much if not more than our homegrown groups, the stage is all set for Fantasy Rainbow to reap the rewards of trans-Atlantic success. Judgement day will come when the album is out of course, but as a lead up to it, this single suggests they might just be in with a fighting chance.
