Five For Free #102

Arms - Summer Skills (Bump In The Night Version)

New York alt-rockers Arms don't mind taking their time when it comes to getting their albums sounding as they'd like. Last year's 'Summer Skills' was their second LP since forming in 2004 and they've now taken the drowsy acoustics of the title-track and given it a brilliant indie-funk overhaul, turning it into one of their finest songs. Strand Of Oaks - Maureen's

Timothy Showalter's Strand Of Oaks project have released new album 'Dark Shores' since we last featured them back in February, and included on the record is mysterious and haunting alt-country ballad 'Maureen's' which also takes in elements of psychedelia and early Neil Young, resulting in what you could call Cosmic American Music.

Pure Bathing Culture - Ivory Coast

As you know, we're partial to a bit of dreampop. Therefore when we heard some tracks from Portland duo Pure Bathing Culture we were suitably impressed by the twinkly guitars and angelic vocals. 'Ivory Coast' is from their new self-titled EP and is both misty-eyed and uplifting. They're showing a lot of promise and we're hoping to hear more of their sweet sounds before too long.

Bad Cop - Wet Lips

Nashville gang Bad Cops have recently put out a split 7" single with Turbo Fruits and 'Wet Lips' is their offering and is available free below. They make a righteous racket that mixes garage, punk and psychobilly and ends up sounding something like the spawn of The Cramps and The Buzzcocks, two bands they probably won't mind being compared to.

Among Brothers - Keep

It's surprising to learn that Among Brothers are from Cardiff, as their sound has more in common with alternative American titans such as Grizzly Bear and Animal Collective. The tribal rhythms and tempo changes on free track 'Keep' are really quite special, building the song to a gorgeous orchestral climax. They sound like they have ideas in abundance.
