Houndmouth - On The Road

Single review by

It hasn't quite been a baptism of fire for Indiana band Houndmouth but it hasn't been far off. Every year at SXSW a few bands get singled out as potential exciting new talents. To get yourself noticed at an event where just about every band on the planet is performing takes some doing, but this quartet managed it, picking up notable press from the likes of Rolling Stone and NBC Rock Center. They also got a mighty support opportunity which led to them touring with the world's biggest hype band of the time, Alabama Shakes. And this is without mentioning the four sold-out London shows.

It doesn't really need pointing out that things have been going swimmingly for Houdmouth, and now this month they've released their debut album 'From the Hills Below the City'. Lifted from the album is single 'On The Road', a track that had us expecting southern blues-rock and just about gives it to us, although their sound is lighter than expected and this could work in their favour, making them a less niche proposition. As a rule though, this song is bluesy, US alt-rock, and there's an awful lot of that about. But they had the talent to get noticed at SXSW ahead of the considerable crowd so there's every chance that with songs this strong they'll get noticed by the wider world too.
