Wild Child - Crazy Bird/Rillo Talk

Singles reviews by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

On Tuesday (8th October), Texan septet Wild Child will be giving the world their new album 'The Runaround', well, they'll be giving it to North America predominantly, but import purchase options are already available on Amazon for UK fans, and ahead of release we thought we'd give the album's two singles so far a good coat of listening to. Wild Child, should you be unfamiliar with their work, are an indie-folk collective. Yes they have banjos and ukuleles and so on, but before you go running for the hills, stop and listen. This isn't the derivative, bandwagon-hopping dross you're thinking it is.

No, these guys aren't interested in that, they're focused on making good songs, and doing so their own way. With time-honoured instruments and so on, comparisons are inevitable, but we'll leave those up to you. 'Crazy Bird' is the most upbeat of the two and has some charming boy/girl vocals and melodies that are designed for easy public consumption but not for stadium sing-alongs like some more corporate-minded acts. Lower in pace but not quality, 'Rillo Talk' makes use of a ticking metronomic beat and a maudlin vibe for the most part; it's the sound of feeling a little let down, perhaps disappointed, but it builds to become something positive, and as its spirits raise and it looks to future prospects, your spirits will join them. Two contrasting songs from a band who are doing their own thing.
