Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk
It could be perfect timing for Canadian punks Your Favourite Enemies to launch an attack on the UK, as music is gradually swinging around to guitar bands again, and judging by the recent public-voted Q awards, there's an appetite for ambition and groups who are brave enough to aim to make their records sound as good as possible. Big bands with big sounds won big prizes. Having formed in 2008 and toured the world, this six-piece know exactly what they're trying to do, and you can't deny that on new single 'I Just Want You To Know' they prove it. This isn't a band who are scared of not being "indie" enough to snare the hipsters; their sound is polished and is made to sound anthemic and a bit blockbusting with it.
Despite this, YFE are a band with a conscience and strongly support human rights groups such as Amnesty International and Rock N' Rights, and they also stick to a DIY ethic despite their music having a grand, widescreen sound. The frenetic, guitar-heavy 'I Just Want You To Know' will make you feel like you're standing in a wind tunnel if you're close to the speakers at one of their gigs, yet they record everything themselves in their own studio and this single is released on their own Hopeful Tragedy Records label. This is a band who prove that taking an ethical and self-made route can still produce a sound that's big enough to take on whatever the majors can throw at us. As they say themselves, "we're so much more than noise".
