iC1s - Beautiful Ugly

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

Comparison, connections and praise from fellow players in the music world. Some bands thrive on this, it's what gives them their start. A good word from someone famous can shift a shed-load more records than being reviewed by, for example, us. London group iC1s were first championed by former Libertine/New York Doll/Dirty Pretty Thing Gary Powell, and have also caught the ear of Alan McGee who compared them to 'Tommy'-era The Who. Other names mentioned have included The Jam and The Clash which reflect the punky side to their indie-rock sound.

By today's standards, you would probably say that new single 'Beautiful Ugly' is closer to classic-rock, as the world of alternative world, quite rightly, continues to be stretched. But in short, these guys have their supporters, and not just in a dedicated batch of fans like most bands. Whether this opens any doors (McGee's on about starting a new label...) we'll have to wait and see. Their live shows are apparently something to behold too. Paul Gambaccini declared that the "rock era" had finished a couple of years ago. I think he'll find a few people might be disagreeing with him on that one...
