This opening track from the new album by London trio Rotifer (led by Robert Rotifer) spills out a few truths about the current state of the situation humanity finds itself in. Lyrically this is very astute, referencing past historical event and revolutions and comparing them to current political situations and the sorry state that consumerism is leaving parts and peoples of the world in. Sound depressing? Well you only need to open your eyes and there's evidence everywhere, so if it does depress you then you were probably blinkered in the first place, but the reality is that although this song may deal with heavy subject matter, it's so good that it's near impossible to listen to just the once.
As thoughtful and political as the lyrics are, the music is pure guitar-pop of the very highest order. Usually songs of this nature are best left around the two-and-a-half-minute mark, but 'I Just Couldn't Eat As Much (As I'd Like To Throw Up)' doubles that without you even realising. This is five minutes of near perfect jangling guitars, quality melodies, driving rhythm and noteworthy lyrics. It's difficult to ask for any more in a song of this style. As an introduction to Rotifer's new album 'The Cavalry Never Showed Up' this is perfect, and if the rest of the album is half as good then it's a must for anyone who thinks that guitar music is either dead or has no relevance any more. Hats off.
