Far-Out Fangtooth - Mother Nature Fetish

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

After missing out on Philadelphia band Far-Out Fangtooth's debut album 'Pure & Disinterested', single 'Mother Nature Fetish' is acting not only as the introductory single to second outing 'Borrowed Time' but a total introduction for me personally. We're reliably informed they've matured a little for this one, although that maturity is described as being less like Sonic Youth and more like The Jesus & Mary Chain, which to be honest are hardly poles apart. That said, this track brings a definite element of post-punk with it, something that we've noticed a revival in of late, and also something that would better suit the JAMC reference than Sonic Youth, and the sound is closer too, so although there's noise and fuzz it is perhaps more refined than the noise-pop/rock that Thurston and co. created.

In case the artwork doesn't give it away, Far-Out Fangtooth are quite psychedelic in sound, with this track perhaps being nearer to, say, Moon Duo than the aforementioned bands. With songs like this we could play around with comparisons all day, but the crux of the matter is whether or not this is a worthy investment or a mere Xerox of better bands. You have to say that, while maybe not a classic, this does have enough quality to do justice to the influences and hold its own alongside them. The band have their own sound which naturally comes from their personal playing techniques and vocals, but give this over to the brothers Reid to record and it would happily slide into their fine back catalogue without anyone batting an eyelid.
