Out This Week - 21st October 2013

Best Coast - This Lonely Morning

The first single from new Best Coast mini-album 'Fade Away' was 'I Don't Know How', a song that used their trademark pop hooks but scrubbed them up to move away from the early lo-fi recordings, something many of that class of bands will need to do. It was ace, and so is 'This Lonely Morning' which offers up much of the same wonderful guitar-pop that's difficult not to like.

The High Wire - Under A Spell

Who knows what TSOC faves The High Wire will give us next? Will it be dreampop, lo-fi, shoegaze, alt-rock, fuzz, gospel, pop? The first single from forthcoming third album, due in January, was the very fine 'LNOE', and it's now followed-up by the gospel/alt-pop/fuzz-rock of the dreamy and experimental 'Under A Spell', a song that sounds like a band moving forward.

Hannah Georgas - Somebody

Vancouver artist Hannah Georgas released her debut album 'This Is Good' in 2010, and the critics agreed with the title, as it received multiple award nominations. Now the indie/alt-pop songstress is back with a follow-up, hoping to build on that success. Her self-titled new album is out this week and free track 'Somebody' is easily up to scratch with its splendid cross-style sound.

The Thespians - Why Do I Like You?

A few years ago The Thespians would be huge by now. The Liverpool band specialise in modern garage-punk of the variety that took off in the wake of The Strokes, The Libertines, Arctic Monkeys and so on, but importantly they sound different from those bands. Their energetic and melodic style is much less shambolic but equally as tuneful, and new single 'Why Do I Like You?' is bursting with life.

OBLIGATORY RECORD OF THE WEEK

Mona & Maria - My Sun

I think we can safely file this one under "major new talent arriving". Mona & Maria are a Norwegian duo whose debut album 'My Sun' is out this week. They've been compared to Nico, and you can get that from the vibe, but the harmonies here are stunning, and if you can imagine that sound with added (but never over-the-top) orchestration then you're getting close. Now you just need to envisage it being remixed by Sonic Boom as he was working on the recent Cheval Sombre album. It's the use of electronics along with those breathtaking voices and such a fabulous song in general that stand this track head and shoulders above just about everything else released this week. Gorgeously majestic.
