If you live in the northern half of Finland then you're probably gearing up for a long, cold winter without much in the way of sunlight right now. It may be picturesque and make for some great opportunities for photographers, but there's the possibility that it could be a bit bleak. Some will appreciate this time of year more than others of course, but Oulu residents Stache have the perfect antidote to any possible onset of winter blues: releasing their debut album. 'The Reason We Get Nothing Done' is set for release later this week (25th October) and is preceded by this double A-side single, one that shows two sides to the band and potentially indicates a reasonable amount of diversity.
As a rule, we're looking at what people might lump in as indie or alt-pop. 'Lunartic' (sic) sees them pushing the boundaries of their sound, having a band feel that takes in analogue electronics (to a small extent) and a more upbeat, dancey sound that wouldn't be out of place in the clubs. It's ripe for remixing too, so don't be surprised if we hear a reworking sometime in the future. There's also a soulful pop side to the track. It's the better of the two here. 'Common Wealth' might give those boundaries a rest, but although the format might not be new, the band have their own sound and this makes the song work. Again there's a soulful vibe and again you get the impression that someone in the band has a penchant for '90s house; the piano could be lifted from that genre. But as a whole this is indie-rock with its own identity. Something that many of their contemporaries fail to achieve.
