The White Kites - Love Songs

Single reviewed by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

OK, so football fans will be all too aware that tonight is a must win game for England when they host Poland at Wembley. Hopefully starting the day with a review of a band based in Warsaw will merely be a friendly gesture and not turn into a curse that will have them beat us (sorry guys, but I want us at that World Cup, so I hope we stuff you!). The White Kites are a brand new band who only formed a few months ago, and although they're based in Poland, the two tracks on this single sound more like English psych-rock whimsy with a strange alt-pop twist. There's not even a hint of an accent, so perhaps they're expats anyway, in which case they'll be on our side. But let's not let the nerves get to things, this is a music site, not a sport one.

First here is 'Love Doctor' and it occupies a strange sonic territory, one that recalls the idiosyncratic songwriters of the late '60s and early '70s. Were it not for the quality of the vocal samples and some of the production, we could be listening to a solo project by one of The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band or Soft Machine. It's a curious mix of antiquated instrumentation and style with current sounds. That could even be a harpsichord at the start. 'Evening Walk' comes from much the same head-space but is more melodic and generally softer and with a more complete sound. It could be the discarded B-side to 'See Emily Play', only it shouldn't have been discarded. It is generally par for the course to give Syd Barrett a mention when talking about sounds of this variety, as he was their most famous proponent. We just hope that Poland's football isn't anything like as interesting as this music.
