Hudson Taylor - Care

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

OK, so we've got two blokes sitting on the back of an open-topped wagon, on hay bales, strumming away on acoustic guitars. One of them is even wearing braces (the trouser variety, not the acceptable teeth correction tool) and the other has a beard. They're a banjo and a waistcoat away from being a major label experiment in cashing in on a certain bunch of English "folk" musicians. The video is below. Ignore it, it ruins the song. Yes, Hudson Taylor will appeal to fans of Mumford & Sons as well as inexplicably mega selling singer-songwriters like Ben Howard, but in a miraculous twist of fate, 'Care' is actually a good song.

Whether the video is engineered by Polydor to cash in on current scenes or is natural for them we don't know, but these two brothers from Dublin can knock out a tune, regardless of the clichéd visuals. The tide of acoustic music won't stop coming in and is already washing away large portions of the UK and Ireland's music scenes, but listening to this mini-anthem with its memorable chorus, neat harmonies (naturally) and surprisingly vibrant vibe, it's obvious that this type of thing doesn't have to be as nauseating as others make it. Hopefully some of these bigger acts will take a leaf out of Hudson Taylor's book and up their game, and hopefully these two will give themselves an individual identity. It would be a waste if something as superficial as their image closed doors for them amongst the more credible music press. They've already built a fan base, they now need to hold on to them.
