Out This Week - 14th October 2013

Temple Songs - I Can't Look After You

If you take their near-namesakes Temples, and then add in the whole garage/beat group revival that's rampant in the south-east, you'll end up with this '60s-style psych track from Manchester's Temple Songs. 'I Can't Look After You' builds on previous single 'Passed Caring' and should see them becoming increasingly well known and well respected too.

Wolf Alice - She

Earlier this year we expressed surprise that Wolf Alice hadn't featured in more of the tips for 2013 lists. We'd been following them since this time last year, and not only had they played some notable gigs, they had some cracking tunes to match. They've built a good fanbase though, and now release their EP 'Blush', and again we'll be surprised if songs like the storming indie-rock of 'She' don't get them noticed more.

Out Go The Lights - Big Balloon

Florida's on a bit of a musical roll at the moment. Our latest discovery from the southern state is Out Go The Lights, an indiepop band who've been around since 2010 and combine jangly guitars with nice melodies. Yeah, it's that simple, but as you know, it's a trick that works amazingly when done well (and that part is not so easy). We think you'll agree that 'Big Balloon' gets the formula just right.

La Luz - Pink Slime

Seattle DIY guitar-pop group La Luz release their new album 'It's Alive' in North America this week with a UK release on the 21st. UK folk need not wait that extra week to sample their delights though, as the band have made single 'Pink Slime' available as a free download in advance. It the kind of song you could have walked into an independent record shop thirty years ago and picked up on 7". So quite good then.

OBLIGATORY RECORD OF THE WEEK

China Rats - Reeperbahn

It was a bit of a shame that when we reviewed China Rats' new EP 'Don't Play With Fire' a couple of weeks ago that they didn't have the record's best track available for public streaming. So the email was welcomed very warmly when they then sent through the link so that everyone can now get an earful of the awesome 'Reeperbahn'. It might sound like a few spare parts and borrowed bits; the drum intro is straight from 'I Am The Resurrection', the vocals and fuzz-rock sound is somewhere between The Raveonettes, Crocodiles and other similar acts, but it sounds just great. And if that wasn't enough, they make the great totally outstanding by throwing in a superb guitar line for the final third (this too sounds borrowed, but it sounds amazing). After a few spins 'Reeperbahn' is rapidly becoming one of my favourite songs of the year so far.
