Sleepy Sun - 11.32

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

The video for Californian psych-rock band Sleepy Sun's new single is shocking. Not in the sense that it's bad, quite the opposite; it's gripping viewing and is very powerful, but the turn of events aren't comfortable to watch. Beginning with two girls out for a night on the town, one girl in particular seems determined to drink herself into oblivion. Having already stumbled from one establishment, she throws up in the street before continuing to drink heavily elsewhere. At this point she seems to be alone, but is joined by a male acquaintance, possibly her boyfriend, and they go for a drive, both swigging from the neck of a bottle as they do so. It's then that a tablet is consumed and causes the girl to freak out beyond belief. She runs through the nearly empty streets in a state of terror, trembling constantly with a horrified look of fear.

The next clip we get is daylight and her dead body on a beach, where someone takes a mystery package that's lying next to her and walks away. A bit heavy going for Sleepy Sun? Well the band have undergone some line-up changes since first appearing on the scene, and '11.32' is possibly one of their heavier, more intense songs anyway, so the match is fitting. Plus the song is a great piece of deep-psych with the band appearing to have taken a rockier, heavy garage turn, at least on this track. If the fuzz-laden weight of the song isn't enough to give you a bit of a wake up call and blow those cobwebs away, then taken with the accompanying footage it will surely open your eyes a little wider.
