Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk
It was the middle of last summer that Bristol band Tidal Wars released their debut single. Well, the press info says Bristol, but their Facebook location has them just a few miles along the coast in Western-super-Mare, but it's all a similar vicinity. Those two songs drew comparisons to many other bands and styles of music; the usual post-punk and shoegaze bands that we mention mainly. New single 'The Shower Door Rattle' sees them bringing us a different sound, and perhaps one that's less expected. Neither of the descriptions above really fit, and the fact that we noted how they were a distinctly British-sounding band also seems a bit out of place on hearing them a year and bit down the line.
It probably seems somewhat contradictory to say that the band are looking forward more here, and then name more bands of yore that they compare to. Well, that's somehow the way it is. There seems to be more of a willingness for Tidal Wars to try new sounds and throw the blueprints in the fire here. We still have a guitar song, and still one that belongs to the indie/alternative world, but they've developed more of an identity and you sense they feel freer to do what they want rather than what they think they should do. That said, you could easily put this song in the same bracket as US slacker-rock bands like Pavement and so on. They're not aiming for note perfection, they're aiming for a good song, and the two things don't always go hand-in-hand. It's a big step forward for the quartet anyway, and that's really good to see.
