Single review by KevW
Is it just me or is there a craze for using old footage of 1950s nuclear bomb testing in music videos at the moment? There's been several of them lately, and the latest is as part of the psychedelic footage that comes with this new single from Welsh experimentalists Gallops. The confusing and sometimes disturbing visual collage probably has some kind of meaning, but we're buggered if we can figure out what. Anyway, it's good to watch and anything that taxes the brain a little can't be doing too much wrong. 'Jeff Leopard' (we know not who he is, as the song is an instrumental) is taken from their debut album 'Yours Sincerely, Dr Hardcore' which is out next week.
It's a challenge to describe the song, but I guess there are elements of hardcore chopped through this musical cocktail, along with math-rock, and electro-rock. It's experimental in nature, yet despite this (and the fact that it's instrumental) it's a relatively concise and easy to listen to track. That's in an alternative way incidentally, we're not talking middle of the road here. Plenty is thrown in; different percussive sounds, crunches and clangs and electronic blasts along with some chugging and heavy guitar. 'Jeff Leopard' is without question the result of many ideas which have fitted together like a jigsaw puzzle to create an unlikely whole. Let's see if they can repeat the trick for the rest of the album.
