GEMS - All I Ever

Single review by KevW

It's not that dreampop duo GEMS want to rub it in or anything, but while the UK is either six feet deep in water down south or covered in snow up north, they took this opportunity to send in their new single with the message that they recorded it on the beach. Thanks guys, hope it was fun! Seriously though, if you read our recent piece about free track 'Void Moon' the nomadic pair actually recorded a selection of songs on the beach in North Carolina (pre-Sandy thankfully) before heading to Washington DC where they're now based, and 'All I Ever' is the latest from those sessions to see the light of day.

If you've been a bit pissed off (or even worse) by the state of the weather in the UK or US then it's songs like this that make everything seem OK again for a few minutes. 'All I Ever' spangles straight into action with guitar that twinkles like the night sky and the vocals soothe any pain or anger away. The production is pure dreampop heaven too, soft yet fuzzy and warm with a chorus that amplifies the soporific effect even more. What 'All I Ever Wanted' boils down to is a wonderful pop record and a few minutes of priceless escapism.
