Sonic Cathedral are claiming that the artwork for their forthcoming 'Psych For Sore Eyes' EP will be the best looking of 2013. Well without 3D glasses you'd have to argue otherwise; it does indeed give you sore eyes. So it's lucky that the double 7" package will come with a complimentary set of glasses to accompany the sleeve which folds out into a large poster. They're not the first to use 3D on a cover, The Cramps and The Raveonettes have both done the same, although it's odd that more people haven't taken to the idea, especially in the world of psychedelia. There's every reason to believe that the EP could be an essential purchase regardless of any gimmicks/artistic statements. Half a dozen new bands are involved, it's on a super reliable label and the whole thing is mastered by Sonic Boom, it's a win-win situation.
The proof of the pudding will be in the eating of course, and currently just one track is available for us to sample. The Band In Heaven are a shoegaze collective from Florida, they've been around for a couple of years but 'High Low' is acting as our introduction. True to form, you can hear the fingerprints of Sonic Boom over this track, whether this is his additions to the mastering or simply his influence on the band in general doesn't matter. It's a spaced-out, sun-blasted piece of droning psychedelia that will be sweet music to fans of all things dreamy, trippy and fuzzy and it's entirely cliche free. With the promise of another five tracks to come on this EP, they can stick David Gest's face on the front and we'd still lap it up. Interstellar stuff indeed.
