Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk
When a band is signed to Memphis Industries in the UK and Sub Pop in the US you know they're going to be good, and we've known these Kiwi's are good since we heard the puntastic 'Kenya Dig It?' about five years ago. That track was taken from their acclaimed second album 'Sea Lion', but somehow since then they've fallen off our radar a little. The Ruby Suns released a third album in 2010 and are now getting everything set for brand spanking new offering 'Christopher' which we'll be able get our hands on at the end of January when they'll also begin an extensive tour of Europe and North America.
Single 'Kingfisher Call Me' has been made available as a free download to anyone who wishes to sign up to their mailing list (something we should have done back in 2008 so we didn't miss an entire album!) and also comes with a mysterious video that was filmed in sub-zero conditions in a Swedish forest. Those false beards must have come in handy for keeping their faces warm (did you really think you'd trick anyone with those things?). The song isn't quite as puzzling, although you couldn't call it conventional either. If you take a touch of the world music element away from Yeasayer then they'd probably come up with some pleasurable indie/alt-pop along similar lines. We've got them firmly in our sights now, so expect more coverage of the album in the coming weeks.
