Five For Free #140

Christina Courtin - Varsity

Hailing from Buffalo, New York, Christina Courtin was brought up as a trained violinist, but since then her music has embraced a more indie-rock sound and her second album 'Varsity' is due to be released in March. On the excellent title-track we do get some violin, but we also get some rather fab lo-fi garage-rock sounds and a sharp and crunching riff that works a treat.

Jack Robert Hardman - Plymouth

Jack Robert Hardman is a singer-songwriter from Ascot who home-records most of his material and cites some top-drawer influences in Phil Spector, The Beach Boys and Simon & Garfunkel, and traces of each can be heard in new track and free download 'Plymouth'. This is a quietly majestic piece of dreampop with production that clearly gives a nod to 'Pet Sounds'; grand but never over the top.

Sandra Kolstad - The Well (We Will Change It All)

Norwegian artist Sandra Kolstad splits her time between Oslo and Berlin and has recently put out her second album '(Nothing Lasts) Forever'. Freebie 'The Well (We Will Change It All)' suggests she's a fan of brackets (and also minimal electro-pop). Basically this track has "hit" written all over it and the fact that it probably wasn't or ever will be only adds to the proof that it's actually very good.

Harper Simon - Bonnie Brae

On his last album you could definitely spot that Harper Simon was the son of Paul, vocally there was a clear similarity. New single 'Bonnie Brae' disguises his voice a little more beneath a wall of buzzing guitar and bass. The man's not living off his father's name anyway, this is a terrific song and we can look forward to more of the same when his new album 'Division Street' is released in March.

Foxtails Brigade - Winter Feat

We only recently reviewed the new single from Foxtails Brigade, and now they're following it up with this wintry offering that suits this time of year. Their chamber-pop is that bit more twinkly and magical on 'Winter's Feat'. The idea was to create a piece that felt as though it was from a fairy tale and this nursery-rhyme/music box track does just that.
