Lazyeyes - Lazyeyes EP

EP review by KevW

Brooklyn's grip on the world of alternative guitar music shows no sign of waning, and we're not getting fed up with the deluge of lo-fi/shoegaze/indiepop/dreampop bands they keep throwing at us either. So what have they got lined up to impress us in 2013? Well they've got Lazyeyes for starters, a band whose debut EP should be out in January and contains a suitably unseasonal/optimistic cover. Mind you, the weather system is buggered right up at the moment, so you never know. This quartet make just the kind of sun-dazzled, warm and fuzzy guitar music that you'd expect, and should appeal to fans of Wild Nothing, DIIV, Beach Fossils and so on. So, naturally, that all seems pretty promising to us.

The EP doesn't disappoint; 'Nostalgia' is a buzz of gentle distortion, distant sounding drums and chiming guitars, it's a tried and tested technique that they stick with for the other three tracks too, but its strength is in the quality of the songs and they're not attempting to reinvent the wheel. And what a gloriously summery delight 'Nostalgia' turns out to be, closely followed by 'Forever', one of those tracks where it seems like everything has been pushed back in the mix to create a mirage effect. Reverberating single 'Wait' makes use of a few pedals and slows the pace resulting in an even more hazy feel with screeching guitar at the end. Completing the set is 'Daydream', essentially more of the same and the final indication that our fuzzy dreampop is in safe hands.
