HUNK! - Dupe

Single review by KevW

We have a lo-fi indiepop band on a Scottish label releasing a new double A-side single on cassette. Sound the indiepop cliche sirens and evacuate the building! Yeah they may be ticking a few "current trend" boxes here but at least they're putting the effort in with it. HUNK! are actually from Dublin too, so that's one less stereotype involved. 'Dupe' is their debut release and has that classic DIY indie sound that was being manufactured on tape back when tapes were still a sensible purchase option (see my loft for proof). As such these two songs contain all the elements you'd expect and nothing else.

'Dupe' itself could be straight from 1984 with its lo-fi and snappy post-punk sound and minimal budget production, but they don't half attack it with some force. HUNK! are no fakers, this may be old school/skool in every way but it's great fun. The better track of the two is 'Hold Out' which is less simplistic and more melodic. It still might as well have been recorded on a telephone answering machine but that only adds to the charm. Sounds like this rarely get to anything approaching chart success, but that's not the point of course, so whether HUNK! plan on sticking around and developing their sound or just blasting out a homemade racket for a couple of years will be up to them. We'll just enjoy it while it lasts.
