EP review by KevW
After meeting in Kansas in 1998, it only took Noah Lebenzen and Thomas Froggatt fourteen years to get their shit together and make a debut EP. 'Chinese Democracy' took Axl and his merry band of sycophants fifteen years, so fourteen years isn't that long, right? Joking aside, they haven't spent that long struggling over these five songs (we don't think so anyway) and that's simply the period of time between two musical minds meeting and finally realising that laying down a few tracks might be a good thing to do. And so we have the self-titled debut EP from Asian She, a duo you could describe as alternative rock of some description, but they don't really fit an exact category.
There are a couple of tracks that almost feel a bit run-of-the-mill; 'Ridin' Round' is fairly non-essential, but when they get it right the results are really quite good. Draped in slide-guitar, 'No Need To Be Nasty' is a contrast of dark and light with the music shining but the vocals being fairly dead-pan. The slowed-down funk groove of 'Horrific Nightmare' lights up in the chorus and is potentially the best song here. This light/shade contrast is a continual feature and is especially noticeable on '6:17' with its moody verses that give way to a chorus of twinkling guitars. It may have taken them a long time to decide on collaborating on some music but it was worth it and hopefully this will inspire them to continue what they've finally started.
