Five For Free #142

The Consolation Project - Crashing Through The Snow With You

Following his recent 'Reflections' EP, New York's Ron Cavagnaro's The Consolation Project are offering up a free download of the festive track 'Crashing Through The Snow With You'. We say festive, and the title kind of is, but other than that it's only festive if your idea of Christmas is sheets of distorted guitar, crashing drums and muffled vocals, which ours is so we're loving this one.

Brooms - Balding

Sticking with New York, this time Brooklyn, and a duo called Brooms who have just released their new album 'In The Backyard'. They're another band that defy classification although you could loosely describe them as indie/alternative with elements of soul, jazz and much more. Free download 'Balding' is lifted from the album and is a refreshingly unusual combination of sounds.

R. Thomasin - Streetlight

Hopping along the US coast just a little we find Boston-based singer/songwriter/producer R. Thomasin who released a free download EP called 'Framed' in October. Taken from it is the lovely dreampop of 'Streetlight' which uses subtle reverb and a delicate wall of sound production technique. It's a great track, and we shouldn't have long to wait for more as there are new tracks recorded already.

Elektra Zagreb - Kesey Palms

Shifting back over to Europe and Croatian/Russian/Portuguese trio Elektra Zagreb who have just announced that their new EP 'Kesey Palms' will be available in February and is the follow up to January's 'Giving Birth. The Young Whales'. The EP's title-track has been made available as a free download and is any indie-rock number that gradually turns into psychedelia as it progresses.

Damien Jurado & Kyle Zantos - Kalla Hus

We don't feature a lot of Christmas songs because most of them are naff. This collaboration between Kyle Zantos (music) and Damien Jurado (lyrics and melody) is an exception to the rule. It's hardly party time though, 'Kalla Hus' is a sombre and downbeat track, but that doesn't prevent it being any less good, in fact if anything it makes the song more powerful.
