Single review by KevW
You've got to wonder how you come up with a record label name like 'Crab Salad Recording Company'. They appear to only exist as the name with which Copenhagen all-girl, teenage noise-rock trio Baby In Vain release records, so we're guessing it's the girls' own label. Debut single 'Machine Gun Girl/The Catcher' was out in October, and this moody beast drops just in time for Christmas, with a EP/mini album planned for the spring. Baby In Vain may be new and they may be young but they've found their feet pretty quickly and have impressed live on plenty of occasions, including as support to the hardest working man in rock, Ty Segall.
As they correctly point out, stoner-rock, post-rock and other genres similar to the sounds they make are dominated by middle-aged men, so that makes the intensity and the sheer force of songs like 'Sweetheart Dreams' doubly brilliant as they're breaking down both age and gender barriers with it. And what an unholy racket they make. This track is a slow, prowling, blues monster of suspense that explodes into great claps of thunderous guitar and feedback with bass so low it could teach dubstep a thing or two. It's only going to take a name-check from one such middle-aged rock god (Josh Homme, Dave Grohl etc.) and these girls will be going global.
