Wavves - Sail To The Sun

Single review by KevW

Well it won't happen again in our lifetimes (unless medical science comes a long way), so many people took advantage of doing things at 12 minutes past 12 on the 12/12/12. So if you missed that gimmick you'll have to wait until 1 minute past 1 on 1/1/1, right at the beginning of the next century. No-wave noise-merchants Wavves took the opportunity to unveil their brand new single 'Sail To The Sun' at that precise time via Pitchfork. Although it was probably evening here in the UK by then. The song is another one that's a precursor to their next album which they'll be letting us hear sometime in the spring.

It was a slight surprise, as the trio appear to have toned down the noise in favour of something that's mildly more accessible. Are they hoping to extend their fanbase with the new record? We'll guess that they are, as why else would they recruit producer John Hill who's more famed for his work with artists such as Rihanna? Existing fans need not worry as there's still plenty of edge, and cranked up loud 'Sail To The Sun' will still piss off your neighbours. They still sound kind of dorky, so they haven't grown up and gone AOR on us, they're simply taking a fresh approach, and one that sounds like it's paid off.
