Ducktails - Letter Of Intent

Single review by KevW

While Real Estate's fanbase and level of critical acclaim have continued on an upward trajectory over the past year or so, guitarist Matt Mondanile's solo project Ducktails has shadowed them every step of the way. On past records Mondanile has taken care of most of the work himself, but forthcoming new album 'The Flower Lane', set for release at the end of January, has seen Ducktails change his approach and broaden the process in which his music is made. The most obvious difference is bringing in collaborators for many tracks which may result in a more varied sound.

On new single 'Letter Of Intent' you can certainly notice an instant variation compared to much of his work, thanks to the sultry vocals of Jessa Farkas of Future Shuttle taking lead, backed by Big Troubles' man Ian Drennan. You'll also find instrumental contributions from Ford and Lopitan, making this some kind of Gorillaz-style chillwave supergroup. Other players will feature on various album tracks, but this first offering suggests that enlisting a few extra musical minds was the correct move, and that, for once, too many cooks have made this laid-back electro-indie single that little tastier.
