Woodpecker Wooliams - Gull

Single review by KevW

Brighton artist Gemma Williams, better known (to the public at least) as Woodpecker Wooliams is a thrillingly unique talent and her new single 'Gull' is taken from recent album 'The Bird School Of Human Being', an unusual concept album where each song title is the name of a different bird. The freaky video might be best avoided by anyone who's had a bad experience watching Alfred Hitchcock's 'The Birds', comprising of scary masks, pieces of meat, desolate cliff scenes and of course the dreaded gulls themselves.

On the outside this song is sugary sweet, all girly, innocent vocals and harps, but these are mixed with scree and a stabbing, irregular beat, outlining her method of combining traditional folk music with modern experimenting. If you can imagine a stripped back Portishead with Beth Gibbons' daughter taking on the vocals you're in the right ball park. Williams' voice isn't really directly comparable to anyone else, although you can hear a possible hint of Kate Bush. Likewise her delivery is like no other, adding drama and suggesting that becoming an actress could be another potential career path. Chilling yet spellbinding stuff.
