Josh Kumra - Waiting For You

Single review by KevW

If you tuned in to watch the Save The Children Christmas Tree Sessions last week you will have enjoyed sets by Spiritualized, Kodaline, Band Of Skulls and more. One of the acts who was a bit further down on the bill was Swindon singer-songwriter Josh Kumra, who by this time next year may be appearing a little higher in the running order of such events. Forget any notions of another guitar-strumming gap-year clone. Kumra's music has more depth and is more modern soul than acoustic introspection, as you can hear on his new single 'Waiting For You' which is out at the start of January and comes with a handful of remixes.

It's the original we like best though, and despite initially sounding as though it could be some glossy and over-produced R&B at first, it soon becomes apparent that it's much better than that. For starters Josh Kumra does have genuine soul in his voice, something that's amplified by a gospel backing, but it's done tastefully instead of attempting any stupid vocal acrobatics. The production is also pretty spot on, resisting the temptation to go over the top and ensuring that the vocals remain the focus. There's a certain bleakness and creepiness to the lyrics, even though they're offering apparent support, so it's an interesting paradox, but one that's quite powerful.
