Stuart Warwick - Man With A Pussy

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

It was just this week that we were singing the praises of Brighton's current music scene, and that's the city that's home to singer-songwriter Stuart Warwick who will be releasing his second album 'The Butcher's Voice' next month, but before then he's casually dropping this single as a late contender for track name of the year. A tender piano ballad along the lines of the superb recent work by Perfume Genius, 'Man With A Pussy' is an ode to being transgender, although the video centres on cross-dressing. His own description of "queer melancholic pop" is perhaps best summed up in this song as opposed to some of the other tracks from the forthcoming full-length.

Stuart Warwick's voice is ideally suited to songs of this nature; it was almost made for ballads and is soaring and note-perfect throughout, really bringing out the emotion of the track. The tale is of confused sexuality, a man who was "in pink from day one" and is shown in the video as middle-aged and transforming himself from male to female with heavy use of make-up and earrings, the crude application of black lipstick and eyeliner adding a further gothic twist. You'd have to say the outcome is more slag than beauty queen but then that's the intention. The quite fitting conclusion is that "you're more man than I'll ever be", put yourself in that position and those words ring true. It's a quite stirring song, and just one of many if our initial listens to the album are anything to go by.
