Aaron & The Burrs - Aaron & The Burrs

Album review by KevW

Another submission by a band who sound incredibly interesting but have a similar regard for publicity as Jeremy Clarkson does for the environment. Aaron & The Burrs have a Bandcamp page where you can download this, which we think is their debut album, for free. Also listed on there are two sets of demos dating back to 2010. Using our Sherlock Holmes-like investigative powers (or in other words, the internet) we've also managed to track down a Myspace page which looks about as used as every other Myspace page out there (i.e. not at all) but has their location down as New York.

So that's the lengthy and comprehensive introductions done, now lets get down to the tunes. And goodness me what fine tunes they are. Entirely instrumental and generally lurking around the two-minute mark, this is a riot of scuzz-bomb garage-surf tracks of a very high calibre. You can trace the line back through to the originators like Dick Dale, The Ventures, The Wailers and so on; basically imagine The Shadows attempting to go punk and you've got the sound down to a single simplified line. You could also sling in a reference to their Welsh counterparts Y Niwl and that would fit happily.

There's not much you can say about the songs other than just listen to them. We all know what surf and garage sound like and we all know the rougher end of that particular strain of music, so without hearing a note, if you recognise any of the names above then you'll have a good idea of what to expect. The only exception to the rule is (ironically) 'Play It Safe' which is slower and passes the three-minute mark. It's practically prog-surf by their standards. All we can really say is that each of these songs is a thrilling explosion of twanging guitars backed by a clattering beat and played with raw passion, and that essentially means Aaron & The Burrs can't fail, whoever they are.
