RAILBIRD - Lucky EP

EP review by KevW

If we were to define The Sound Of Confusion in 2012 then we'd probably have to come up with a band from Brooklyn, preferably one who spell their name in capital letters and whose music is a mixture of experimental indie and electro-pop sounds. The review would probably start with us stating that the band in question are one of many from the same place and doing the same thing and would sound like we were about to give them a right good slagging for just being so god damn similar to hoards of other bands out there, only then we'd say that despite being a seeming parody of a 2012 band that their music's actually really good. So say hello to RAILBIRD, you know where they're from and a rough estimation of their sound already.

They're pretty darn good though! 'Lucky' is a three track EP which features 'Jump Ship' a song which began to spread through the blog world and other music buzz outlets in the summer. It's laid-back and soulful, possibly a little too smooth if anything but fairly hard to argue with. The two new tracks are better. 'Mirrors' is spooky in the way it chops and layers vocal coos over some snappy and irregular beats, adding a few crunches of guitar for that cutting edge that steers them away from the tedium of convention. Best of all is 'Lucky', another jittery and experimental alt-pop track that takes indie, electro, rock, hip-hop, avant-garde and more and chucks them into a cement mixer and waits for the results to pour out the other end. When they do they sounds genuinely innovative. Maybe that's what's been so good about this year in music; so many bands are doing the exact same thing, and that thing is innovation. Let's hope the boundaries can be stretched even further next year.
