Padded Cell - Guardians Of The Night

Single review by KevW

It's been a few years since we last heard from London veterans Neil Higgins and Richard Sen, but their Padded Cell project gives us this dancefloor-filling slab of modern disco just in time for the party season. With guest vocals from Free Disco, 'Guardians Of The Night' mixes classic beats, funky basslines and modern electronica that culminates in a multi-functional piece of music for party animals, clubbers and just your general music fans too. Having previously been championed by the likes of Erol Alkan and James Murphy, this could signify the duo's attempt to come back and reclaim their crown.

They're endeavouring to do so in some style too, with the A-side being a non-stop four-to-the-floor number that isn't made by two men hunched behind laptops. 'Guardians Of The Night' uses a proper band, with live sax, bass, guitar and percussion. There's nothing plastic about their sounds and real instruments always feel that bit more vibrant. On the B-side there's more of the same with freestyle percussion, only this time they up the synth level to "dirty" and set about making a darker but still floor-filling track, one that possibly could have taken top billing due to it having that grittier edge. It's good to have them back.
