Youth Lagoon - Raspberry Cane

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.com

Set in a fantasy world that doesn't look particularly appealing, the video for Youth Lagoon's new single is both creepy and compelling. A place where strange humanoid creatures exist, often seemingly under water, and what appear to be odd monsters lurk in the dark. Despite this, the video is often unappealing yet still somehow enchanting and is the perfect match for this epic and spellbinding musical journey. There's been no expense spared in the songwriting department, that's for sure.

It's all very fitting really, as Trevor Powers, the man behind the moniker, began writing his debut album in 2010 with the intention of documenting the "trials of his mind", and the mind can be a weird, twisted and downright strange place. Just ask your dreams. 'Raspberry Cane' is one of those songs that you just need to drop everything and listen to. Not through it's brashness, loudness or raw power, but for its beguiling and unusually complex but accessible nature. The song is like going on an adventure; it's made up of different sections, but when you join them all up you're left with something quite special.
