Kill Moon - Black & Blue

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

From that vast musical colony that we know as Brighton are Kill Moon, a quartet who formed last year and have just released new single (we think it's their second, but don't quote us on that...) 'Black & Blue'. With much of the city's scene seeming to prefer the now common blend of indie and electro-pop sounds, it's nice to hear that shoegaze and fuzz-rock are both being catered for too. This track could be categorised as either and falls into both camps.

So the description will be a familiar one: lots of guitars and a fair few pedals attached to them. Drumming that consists of actually smacking the bloody things, not tinkering about with delicate percussion, and vocals all caught up in the middle of the storm. As with any good tune of this genre, a decent melody is what transforms the noise from being, well, noise, to being something celebratory, and so they include one of those too. Not a lot of originality here, but that doesn't seem to be the plan at this point in their career. Kill Moon are happy just giving us a storming song like this.
