Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk
They might have a band name that sounds like a children's novel written by Snoop Dogg, but King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard are pretty far away from hip-hop (or reggae as he's now making). The Aussie psych collective have actually been in existence for a while and are about to release their third album, although this is the first time they've been brought to our attention. Once again, it feels like we've been missing out. 'Fill Your Lungs' is out in September and will hopefully get a little more coverage in the UK thanks to the other Australian psych bands who our press have fallen for, because this is just as good.
The single '30 Past 7' is a hybrid: it's a mixture of the retro sounds of the original psychonauts of the 1960s and the current crop. It's a quite spectacular song. With an series of unusual sounds lying below the surface, we get twangy, surfy guitar and what sounds like a sitar, all of which give this that '60s vibe, but the vocals, distorted and hidden in the depths of the music, along with the production feel much more up to date. Al kinds of cliches could be used to describe this music, and all would be correct. The only thing that isn't a cliche is the song. Yeah it borrows, but it does so in it's own way, and it's really quite special.
